Reviews Starting Next Week! Also, Other News

Hey there!

So it’s about time I finish with this long absence, huh? Well, I kind of already finished the absence by posting my Space Patrol Luluco reflection earlier in the week.

Anyway, starting next week, you’ll see me begin to post reviews here again! I’m again going to try to aim for Fridays for each new review, but, as per usual with me, it may end up being pushed back to Saturday for some weeks. I’m going to try hard to keep people up to date through my Twitter (@AnimeBirdTweet). You can continue to see my tweets at the bottom of every page on this site.

The reviews I’ll be posting over the next few weeks will be quite interesting. A lot of them are well-known shows, to be honest, but it’s not just that. The shows I’ll be reviewing are shows that I either really like or really dislike. Not every show can be a winner, huh?

I also have some other news to share as well:

I had tried this thing for a short while to live-tweet my reactions to shows I was about to review, doing it with the show “Flowers of Evil”. I kind of stopped after the third episode because 1) I haven’t gotten around to watching any more episodes and 2) it honestly kind of stinks needing to pull myself away from the screen every so often to write a response. My Twitter bio still states that I live-tweet shows, but that’s probably not going to continue. I know I only tried it for a short period of time, but I just don’t feel it’s the thing for me; at least, not at this point… maybe we’ll try again later down the line? (I will still be finishing Flowers of Evil at some point and writing a review for it.)

Another thing I have written in my Twitter bio is the fact that I’ll also be talking about video games! And indeed I will be. I’m more looking at doing reflection and editorial pieces for right now, and there’s no set schedule as for when I’ll be posting any of that, but it’s good to mention for when I do start posting them and people (hopefully don’t) get confused.

I also do want to try to do more reflection pieces and telling stories about anime as well, not unlike my Space Patrol Luluco one. I think that perhaps that’s what’s kind of missing from this site… well, that and a writer who’s able to keep a consistent schedule lol. Reflections and stories, in my mind, will help me and this website be more unique; I’m not just some guy prattling off my unwanted reviews on random shows, but I’m also sharing my stories and thoughts about them, and thus sharing a bit of my world with you.

As for right now, though, there isn’t a fixed schedule for much any of these things, beyond the reviews every week. This of course may mean that nothing get’s posted at all in the reflection/stories/video games sections, but we’ll see.

I see myself probably taking another break again, most likely in August or September, and lasting until at least October. I’m saying this now just so when I do inevitably disappear off this website, it’s not completely without warning.

I feel that’s probably how this website is going to go: I’ll post for a little while and then disappear for another while. I tried to fool myself into believing I could consistently post things here ad infinitum, just like the bigshot anime reviewers and the other people doing their best here on WordPress and elsewhere… but I don’t see that being me. Talking about anime and running this website has always been nothing more than a hobby, a side activity, for me, and so I shouldn’t push myself to try to write and post things here when I just don’t want to.

So I’ll most likely end up continuing to take breaks every now and then from this site, during which you won’t see anything posted from me. Now that I’ve said to both you all and to myself that I will be taking breaks, though, perhaps these breaks won’t end up being as long as my previous ones have been? I’ll also try to give more warning before I decide to hop off for a while, and not just silently leave things be for weeks and weeks.

At this point, I think that’s most everything I wanted to share or say about this website. I kind of ended up writing most of this as a single, giant stream of words coming from my mind to this screen, so maybe I’ll have a more organized post later reiterating some of these things and also talking a bit more about my motivations? We’ll see, I guess lol.

Anyway, look forward to my reviews, starting up again next week!

I’ve been absent again!

Hello!

Long time hearing from me, huh?

My apologies; when I disappeared for that short while due to the website restructure and all the busy stuff I was dealing with at that time, I was only expecting that to only last a few weeks or something.

Obviously, that went on for longer than a few weeks.

I’ve continued to have things that I needed to focus my time on. I’ve honestly not had much time for personal hobbies and other things. (And honestly, all the free time I have had, I’ve spent playing my new Nintendo Switch… I really do have my priorities in order, huh?)

Part of that includes writing new reviews. My Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon-Maid review is maybe a bit over half-done (I think… I honestly haven’t even taken a look at it in a while), and I’ve only made minimal progress with writing reviews for other shows from that previous season. I haven’t watched any of the shows of the current season, despite there being a few that certainly seemed interesting to me.

Luckily, the things I’ve been working on have started to clear up. I’ll still need a week or two to finish up what I’m doing, and then I can start focusing on stuff like this again. (Although I still have a decent way to go in Breath of the Wild… so that will also be competing for my time lol.) After that point, I’ll try to start writing new reviews, and make a small stockpile.

It’s not that I’ve lost interest in writing anime reviews, because I honestly think it’s kind of fun to put out my opinions on these shows (even if no one else reads them, that’s fine). I think I’ve not had the easiest time making the transition from reviews being things I wrote on my own schedule to put in a notebook, to reviews being things I post on a set schedule for the world to see, though.

Part of it as well, I think, is the fact that I honestly have become a bit more disinterested in anime over the years. I’ve become pretty aware of its flaws, and anime is pretty quick to tread through the same tropes over and over. I still have a fascination for anime as a medium and I have a middling curiosity in the shows being put out, but I don’t see myself being as excited a fan of it as I was two or three years ago.

I’ll aim to return to this website in late May or early June, with a whole bunch of reviews of a whole bunch of shows. I want to be able to celebrate the one-year anniversary of my first review here (although I probably won’t do anything special this time around), so I don’t want to spend that time being inactive.

Anyway, if anyone’s been curious about where I’ve been, there you go. I apologize for how long I’ve been gone, and I hope I’ll see you again soon in the future!

Jayke (AnimeBird)

P.S. I’ve also been thinking more about a video format for my reviews. If I were to do video reviews, though, they probably won’t be for quite a while (like, years)… assuming I’m still doing this at that point.

Mega Website Update Post Thing!

Oh, hello!

So I’ve been cooking up some things for this website, and I thought it’d be knife to talk about them! … Oh, I’m sorry, did I say “knife”? I meant “nice”. Honest mistake, truly.

Funimation February

First of all, by sheer coincidence, I will be able to do a Funimation February! In case it was not made aware before, I stockpiled a bunch of reviews that I’ve made before I even started this site, and it turns out a good majority of the reviews I’ve yet to publish are from Funimation-licensed titles. (It wouldn’t be a majority, but I ended up scrapping a number of reviews because they weren’t written well enough, so the majority left over are that.)

Thus, look forward to me doing that this February! Maybe I’ll try to find a fancy little way to spruce up the site or something during that, but don’t count on it.

Along with that, I will be writing two non-review pieces for the month of February. The first will talk about the history of Funimation as a company; although I won’t really be providing much anything that you can probably find yourself, I want to compile it as part of this whole big event.

The second post will be more of a piece on North American licensors/distributors at large, and talking about their role in the anime process. I want it to be the starting point of a growing number of posts talking about the anime industry and how it works, simply because I’ve always wanted to do that since I began writing here. So hopefully that will be a good kickstart that will lead to more industry-related posts in the future.

Somewhat Related Things… plus Twitter!

This being said, I might not be posting a review this Friday to prepare for that (and other things going on in my life). I don’t want to completely rule it out just yet, but if you don’t see one on Friday, you’ll know why. I will try to mention it on Twitter if it ends up not happening.

Speaking of which, I do have a Twitter! In fact, it’s been at the bottom of every page here on this website! I’ll be trying to be more active on it, so if you want more of a look into what I’m doing with this (or anime in general), please follow me there! My account is AnimeBirdTweet, since AnimeBird was already taken. :/

Also, shoutouts to Karandi at 100 Word Anime! They’re a pretty cool blog, and they just started a Patreon too! Karandi has a lot more followers and is more active than I am, so they’re succeeding in every way I’m failing, but hey, that’s part of what makes them cool!

March Troubles

Alright, now to switch gears.

Sometime in mid-to-late March, this website will be going down for up to a week while I figure out some back-end stuff.

Actually, more specifically, the website will still be around, but it will be at “animebirdreviews.wordpress.com”, rather than the URL you’re used to (“animebird.net”). So I’m not gonna be actually gone during that period of time, I just will be harder to find.

It is temporary, I assure you! When I first started this website last year, I ended up in a setup that was needlessly complicated (and expensive), mainly because I’m pretty new to this whole owning-a-website thing. I’ve learned since then, though, but to implement the changes to make things easier on me, it will require some downtime.

I’m just putting this here now, so whoever reads this in the near future will be notified. … If it’s already past March (2017), well… you don’t have to worry about anything then, do you? … Why are you even reading this anyway?

Other Website Update Stuff

So, now I’ll just give a quick rundown of some other things I’ve changed or that are in the works:

  1. I added a “Marathon Mode” option to the top navigation bar, which you can get to by putting your mouse over the “Reviews” button (if you’re on mobile, I’m not entirely certain how you’ll get there, sorry). If you’re looking for a way to read all of my reviews in one place (for whatever reason), here you go! … Honestly, I just added it there because I thought it’d be kind of cool (or at least silly).
  2. I’ll be doing further translations for the McDonald’s anime ad thing. I asked people if they wanted me to do so on YouTube, and (unsurprisingly), a decent number said yes. I won’t give a deadline for that, since I haven’t even thought about it much yet, but it’ll be happening eventually.
  3. My 1-year-anniversary (since my first review) will be coming up this summer! I do have plans for things I want to do for it, but I’m gonna keep quiet for now.
  4. I’ll be trying to unify the colors and fonts used on my site and in my branding here. I don’t know yet if I’ll change the website to match the branding, or change the branding to match the website. We’ll see in the future though!
  5. Should I make the font size bigger for my review posts? It’s an 11 pt font; it’s not unreadable, but it is noticeably smaller. I’ll be pondering it.

And that’s about it. I know this is kind of long for an update post (but still not as long as my shortest review). I wanted to say a bunch of stuff though! So here we are.

I’ll see you around again sometime soon!

Jayke (AnimeBird)

Farewell to 2016

Alrighty, well, that’s one for the record books. Of course, last year will probably win a lot of records with “worst” in the title, but ehh, whatever.

Aside from the hectic world crumbling around us, 2016 stands out to me as the year I actually started this website here, Anime Bird! It’s… well, it’s a website.

For my first half a year here, I wasn’t exactly expecting myself to skyrocket off the ground into super-popularity… which is good, because I really didn’t skyrocket into super-popularity at all! So that’s one point for me, I guess. That being said,  I think I’ve become a bit more comfortable here, and it does excite me to see people reading my posts, and liking them and following me (even if it’s usually the same two people liking and commenting on my stuff, that’s still better than none, and I appreciate you both a lot!)

I posted 15 reviews in 2016, and I’m pretty happy with the quality of them. Two of them were accompanied with an “Additional Thoughts” segment. In total, though, this means that out of the 26 weeks I was active here, I had 12 weeks where nothing was posted (I posted my Tanaka-kun and Danmachi reviews in the same week). That’s almost half of the entire 26 weeks; while I previously announced a hiatus or “no review this week” for some of them, that only counts for a handful of the weeks without reviews.

For 2017, I do want to try to be more active, and posting a review every week… or at least for the weeks where I don’t post a review, consistently say that I won’t beforehand. My website actually got a decent amount of traffic during October, the month that I had totally disappeared, which is a major disappointment, because they could’ve become regular fans of this blog.

Along with that, I’ve translated two YouTube videos. If you’re wondering why you don’t see more translation things out of me… honestly, it’s because I haven’t found anything else that I wanted to really sit down and translate. I do want to practice and improve my Japanese, and part of it does come down to me trying to find something on my own that I want to translate, but at the same time, I just haven’t been feeling the desire to.

That’s another thing I’d like to do more of this year, even if it results in me just re-translating things that have been translated before, just so I can get the practice. I may look into doing Vocaloid songs, I dunno. I’m open to suggestions!

Lastly, for 2017, I also want to make more posts other than reviews (and potentially translations). I’m a pretty darn busy person, unfortunately, so it does surprise me sometimes how I am able to keep this blog going, but at the same time, there is more about anime and the anime industry that I want to talk about that I just don’t have the ability to do in reviews alone. I don’t know if my schedule will permit me to spend time writing more posts, but I really would like to do so. (Especially since I hinted at doing a mini-series about American anime licensors before.)

And maybe, hopefully, perhaps, fingers-crossed… I may do some video anime reviews too.

I have big plans for this year, and I have absolutely no idea if I’ll do any of them! We’ll just have to see what 2017 holds, and hope the world survives to see 2018.

Until next time,

Jayke (Anime Bird)

P.S. I do want to do a bigger post at some point talking about who I really am, since I’ve been wanting to move away from my former idea of “Anime Bird” being this unknown entity. I’ll just add that to my ever-growing list of things I wanna get done this year…

P.P.S. That image features characters from “New Game”, found on Crunchyroll’s Twitter! I will totally be doing a review on that… soon, hopefully.

Sorry for the absence!

Hey there!

Long time, no talk, huh? Yeah, sorry about that. I got too caught up in other things, but I’m still around.

I will be posting a brand-new review this Friday, and trying to get back into the swing of posting every Friday. I’ve watched a number of interesting shows recently, and I wanna share my thoughts!

So hang tight, and you’ll hear from me again really soon!

Small Hiatus

Hey there!

This is gonna be a super small and quick post, simply because of my schedule. I just tweeted about it, but I’ll also make a full-out post, just to give this maximum visibility.

I’ll be going on hiatus until August 15th. There’s a couple of reasons why I’ll be doing so, but I don’t have the time to go into it right now. The biggest thing, though, is I’m just busy. This site doesn’t take up too much of my time, but as you can tell, I haven’t even had the time to update it properly.

Anyway, I gotta go. I’ll see you all when I return!

About my life and reviews

Hey there!

So I said over Twitter that I would be posting two reviews yesterday, because I couldn’t do one last Friday, and because I was late with the one for the Friday before.

Obviously, that didn’t happen.

I could go on and on with my excuses (and I will in just a few moments), but I know that when it comes to being punctual with these things, I don’t really much have anyone or anything to blame but myself. Honestly, I’ve had a pretty long history of being bad with time management, so this is just another example to put there (specifically, example 15,499).

So, I will be posting one of the two reviews tonight, probably within a few minutes of this post being put up, and then I’ll be trying really hard to make sure I have reviews for every Friday afterwards. I will try to get the second of the two reviews up next Tuesday (as the review for this Friday will be something different), but, well, we’ll see what happens with that.

Anyway, so some of the reasons why it didn’t happen:

  1. I started a new job in real life. I actually started it about half a month ago, but the end of June marked the end of training… so the training wheels came off and my employer let go of me (figuratively) to see if I’d be able to balance on my own. Not unlike my actual experiences trying to learn how to ride a bike, it didn’t go too well. It’s not a difficult job, but it has a lot of tasks, and altogether, it’s adds up to being a pretty time-consuming thing. And time, as we know, is not something I have the best grasp of. So that’s been difficult to deal with, and schedule around.
  2. I planned to spend the Independence Day weekend (the United States’s Independence Day, that is) finishing the show that I was doing yesterday’s second review on. However, I had less time than I expected/planned to be able to accomplish that. So that didn’t really get done. (It also bled over into the volunteer work I’m doing for the Skip Beat release here in the United States… luckily, things still seem to be okay on that front.)
  3. Honestly, I’m just a bit out of the swing of things, when it comes to writing reviews. Both of the two reviews for yesterday, and the Space Patrol Luluco one before it, were for shows that only very-recently finished airing. All of my other reviews posted so far (excepting the Tatami Galaxy one, which was finished only hours before posting), are all over two months old. This means, up until I wrote that Tatami Galaxy review, I haven’t been writing anything for two months. Like most other skills, writing is something that needs constant practice, and by taking those two months off from it, I’ve become a bit rusty. I think I still write quality work today, but it’s just not coming as quickly as it used to. I used to be able to finish a single review in a night, if even, but Space Patrol Luluco took about 8-ish hours altogether to write. Hopefully as I keep going with this, I can start to get quicker with it again, but it’s been yet another wrench in this whole process.

To be honest, though, this review site is catering to an audience of maybe about 7 readers right now (and even that may be an optimistic number). Frankly, I’m not too concerned about being too late with these reviews, because almost no one in the entire world would even know. Not to, of course, belittle the people who I see pop up on a lot of my reviews – I appreciate you a lot – but it’s an obvious statement to make when I say I’m still in the little-leagues here.

Hopefully, though, if I continue to be more consistent, and maybe even get some of my other ideas out of my head and into existence on this website, we’ll start to see things go somewhere.

Finally, one last thing: I originally made this site and the related social media accounts to do the whole “person-who-hides-own-identity” thing; so far, there’s very little on this site to trace what’s being posted here to an actual person. It’s something we see people like HowToBasic or Ask A Korean do, and I thought it’d be cool to do something similar. However, the more and more I think about it, the less and less I’m liking the idea. So, at some point relatively soon, I plan to actually reveal who I am, and connect this site back to my own identity. I’ll still continue with the AnimeBird Twitter and other accounts I have, but I’m not gonna be making “AnimeBird” be some anonymous person anymore. It’s not that fun.

Anyway, if you read this far, thanks for letting me get all this off my chest. I expect this site to basically be just about anime and nothing else, so I don’t want to continue posting personal things here, but I felt this is stuff that was worth mentioning, given what’s been going on.

Until next time!

Welcome!

Hey there! My name is… well, you can call me AnimeBird. … Or Bird. Or something, I don’t know. What’s in a name? Anyway…

If you’re reading this, I’d like to specifically welcome you – yes, you! – to my anime review site!

Wait, what, you say? This is an anime review site? Yes, this is an anime review site. (How many more times can I fit that phrase into this post? lol) On this anime review site (ding – one more!), you’ll see me post reviews of various anime shows that I’m watching, have watched, or have otherwise experienced enough to be able to say something about it.

I don’t have a set schedule as to what show will be reviewed next; frankly, it just kind of comes down to what I feel like. I’ll be posting a new review every week, though, so be sure to check back and see it!

For now, I’m going to get back to improving this website and making it look the way I want it to look!

Until the first review,

AnimeBird

P.S. I don’t just write reviews! I also will have other posts about anime-related things as well. I’m also slowly but surely working on improving my Japanese, so look out for posts about me translating materials from Japan.
