No Review Today!

Greetings!

In a rare move, I’m actually announcing that I’m skipping this week instead of just mysteriously vanishing for a while lol.

But yeah. It’s in the title. There won’t be a review today! Biggest reason is that it’s Black Friday, and that leads to busy times for those who work retail. I honestly haven’t really started yet with the review for the third season of Free!, but that is next on the list. I do wanna have it out next week Friday Sunday, but we’ll see how that goes. I’m not as fast as I used to be when it comes to writing reviews.

Also, once I finish that last Free! review, it’s probably about time to move on to something that isn’t Kyoto Animation, huh? Let’s say… we have an adventure.

I’m Back Y’all!

Greetings!

It’s been a while, huh?

My apologies for being gone as long as I have, I hadn’t intended for this long break. However, it’s not really unexpected either, let’s be honest.

I don’t really have any reason to give for not posting here except… I just haven’t really wanted to. I’ve wanted to spend my time on other projects and doing other things. The thought would cross my mind every now and then of “hey, I should try to write another review” or something, but I never really… felt like it.

Well, I’m here to see that I have some stuff ready to go now, and I’m excited to get posting!

I’ve seen a number of long-running shows recently, and I’m excited to share my thoughts, season by season. After that, I’ll probably try to dive into a couple Netflix-exclusive shows, since I recently got a Netflix subscription. After that, expect me to disappear again for a little while.

Enough stalling though, yeah? Let’s get to talking about anime!

See you Friday!

– Jayke

Taking a Short Break!

Hey there!

So I finished Funimation February, and just barely in time too! My last review was for Baka and Test, which I… didn’t think very highly of. It was meant to have been posted earlier (preferably last Friday), but it seemed the world was transpiring against me being able to do that.

To be honest, there was a couple of difficult things that needed my attention during this time period first and foremost, beyond me finishing up some review for some site. A number of these difficult things have passed now, though, hopefully, and that’s when that review got posted! And now that it’s been posted, I’m gonna take a break!

Now, you might be saying, why take a break now, after your hardships have been solved? Well, there’s a couple things: firstly, I don’t know for certain if all the issues have been solved. Either way, some of the decisions I’ve made are going to reverberate in my life for the next few days/weeks. Secondly, I’m beginning a strange transitional phase in my life right now (trying to change careers), and I want time to focus on what I need to do for that (so yay, more hardships, but at least it’s a planned hardship). Thirdly, I want some time to build up a bit of a backlog again for this site. I do currently have one fully written review, and three partially-written reviews already, but I like to have a sizeable backlog.

I plan on being gone for pretty much most (if not all) of March.

By the time I come back, the Winter 2018 season will be finishing up, and hopefully my reviews for some of those shows should be ready to go by that point! I will also be trying to finish up those partially-written reviews, and also writing one more review for a show I’m currently rewatching.

I will also be planning a piece about Your Name when I come back! It will not be a review of the movie (that may come later), but more a perspective piece on it. I feel my perspective on the movie is pretty uncommon, and I wanted to share it. I do have some preparation work to do for this piece, so it may take some time, but be prepared for that!

Finally, thank you to those of you who have enjoyed what I’ve written so far! My posts haven’t really spurred much discussion or anything, but it’s still nice to come in and see someone had liked one of my reviews or began following my blog. I’m not doing this to become profitable or popular, I’m doing it solely as a “why not” project, but I enjoy the thought that maybe, just maybe, someone enjoys seeing my posts here.

Anyway, see you all in a month!

– Jayke

AnimeBird, plans for 2018!

Greetings!

Geez, it’s been a long while, hasn’t it? I really hadn’t meant to disappear from here like I did after my A Silent Voice review. I’m actually pleasantly surprised with how many people saw it, liked it, and followed me as a result.

I’m sorry I’ve disappointed you with my lack of new releases thus far D:

If I were to be a good content creator, I would say that things will be different this year and that you’ll see post more than ever before! and things of that nature. But… that’s probably not going to be how it goes here. I’ll be trying to post more often than I have these past few months, that’s for sure, trust me, but it won’t be every week on the dot.

: :

Since some point last year when I said to you all (and to myself) that this is nothing more than a side hobby, I’ve been really treating it as such: something I do only in my spare time and when I feel the desire to spend doing it. It unfortunately leads to this website/blog thing being woefully neglected at times, though. I do feel bad about anyone who actually is interested in my posts and my thoughts and is receiving nothing from me here.

I have some reviews stockpiled that I wanted to post after I wrote a review for “Your Name”, but seeing as I never finished that review, I never posted it nor posted the stockpiled ones. I’ve been telling myself to just post one of the stockpiled ones and forget about that plan, but obviously, that never came to be either (in the past month).

I’ll be coming into 2018 posting these stockpiled reviews that I mentioned. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, it’ll be reviews for the same exact shows that I was hinting at in the post I linked to a few paragraphs ago. So allow me to quote what I said back then:

The reviews I’ll be posting over the next few weeks will be quite interesting. A lot of them are well-known shows, to be honest, but it’s not just that. The shows I’ll be reviewing are shows that I either really like or really dislike. Not every show can be a winner, huh?

So look forward to that 😀

I will say that despite not posting much on this website/blog thing, I am relatively active on Twitter! Recently it’s just been retweets from my main/personal account, but they’re retweets about the things I’ve watched! If you want my (condensed) thoughts about a show I’ve watched, you’ll find it there, and you’re also open to ask me about shows too!

Also, quick last thing: I do plan on doing that Funimation February thing I did last year again! No promises on those extra pieces about the company itself or the anime industry as a whole, as I had said (and failed to do) last year. But I will be reviewing Funimation shows!

: :

Yet another thing I mentioned in that post and also haven’t yet done (wow, good going past me! /sarcasm), I wanted to talk about video games! Random thoughts about them, maybe semi-reviews about them, who knows? I’m kind of transitioning this website/blog thing to being just my place to voice my thoughts about the media I consume, and of course, I’ve been consuming video games.

I’ve recently been going through a Paper Mario phase (again), so you can actually look forward to a post from me talking about the entire series. Who knows when I’ll have it up, but… it’s a thing.

: :

Anyway, thank you so much for sticking with me… if, uhh, you have been sticking with me… and I’m sorry about my lack of posting here.

I’ve said it before, but this site is nothing more than a side hobby for me. But still, it does sadden me to see people reading/liking my things at the same time I’ve neglected to post anything new. I don’t want people to think I’ve abandoned this place, although that honestly is what it looks like. I guess I don’t quite know how to rectify that, though.

Oh well.

I hope I’ll post more often in 2018, and I hope you’ll be around to read it (and hopefully like it)! See you later on! 😀

Jayke (AnimeBird)

A Quick Update

Hey there! Like the title says, this is gonna be pretty quick.

So my apologies for disappearing again from this website since my previous post that said I’d be done being disappeared lol. Obviously, I was wrong. At the point of writing that post, I had a number of half-finished reviews I hoped I would finish quickly to get posted, but my slump continued much longer than I expected it to.

Come into late August, and although I had finally, finally, gotten out of that slump, my laptop began to act up. I had to send it out for repairs to be done. That was early September. Last I heard, they were working on replacing a part, but said replacement was on backorder. I’ll be reaching out again next week, though, because I am definitely growing rather impatient here.

Moving past that, though: so I recently had the chance to go out and see No Game No Life Zero in theaters, and boy do I have some thoughts about it! Lol. It’s a pain to have to go out of my way to find computers to do writing and other things on, but either way, I’m rushing through writing my reviews for the TV anime and the movie so I can post them this coming week.

Anyway, so all in all, once I have my laptop back, I can start to get everything back in order and begin posting then. It’s just a matter of when.

So yeah. Talk to you later!

Jayke

P.S. If you’re not already, follow me on Twitter (https://twitter.com/AnimeBirdTweet). I don’t post too often there, but if you’re a bit curious about what I’m watching and my general thoughts, that’s the place to check.

Update about this Website

Hey there!

So it’s about time I finish with this long absence, huh? Well, I kind of already finished the absence by posting my Space Patrol Luluco reflection earlier in the week.

Anyway, starting next week, you’ll see me begin to post reviews here again! I’m again going to try to aim for Fridays for each new review, but, as per usual with me, it may end up being pushed back to Saturday for some weeks. I’m going to try hard to keep people up to date through my Twitter (@AnimeBirdTweet). You can continue to see my tweets at the bottom of every page on this site.

The reviews I’ll be posting over the next few weeks will be quite interesting. A lot of them are well-known shows, to be honest, but it’s not just that. The shows I’ll be reviewing are shows that I either really like or really dislike. Not every show can be a winner, huh?

I also have some other news to share as well:

I had tried this thing for a short while to live-tweet my reactions to shows I was about to review, doing it with the show “Flowers of Evil”. I kind of stopped after the third episode because 1) I haven’t gotten around to watching any more episodes and 2) it honestly kind of stinks needing to pull myself away from the screen every so often to write a response. My Twitter bio still states that I live-tweet shows, but that’s probably not going to continue. I know I only tried it for a short period of time, but I just don’t feel it’s the thing for me; at least, not at this point… maybe we’ll try again later down the line? (I will still be finishing Flowers of Evil at some point and writing a review for it.)

Another thing I have written in my Twitter bio is the fact that I’ll also be talking about video games! And indeed I will be. I’m more looking at doing reflection and editorial pieces for right now, and there’s no set schedule as for when I’ll be posting any of that, but it’s good to mention for when I do start posting them and people (hopefully don’t) get confused.

I also do want to try to do more reflection pieces and telling stories about anime as well, not unlike my Space Patrol Luluco one. I think that perhaps that’s what’s kind of missing from this site… well, that and a writer who’s able to keep a consistent schedule lol. Reflections and stories, in my mind, will help me and this website be more unique; I’m not just some guy prattling off my unwanted reviews on random shows, but I’m also sharing my stories and thoughts about them, and thus sharing a bit of my world with you.

As for right now, though, there isn’t a fixed schedule for much any of these things, beyond the reviews every week. This of course may mean that nothing get’s posted at all in the reflection/stories/video games sections, but we’ll see.

I see myself probably taking another break again, most likely in August or September, and lasting until at least October. I’m saying this now just so when I do inevitably disappear off this website, it’s not completely without warning.

I feel that’s probably how this website is going to go: I’ll post for a little while and then disappear for another while. I tried to fool myself into believing I could consistently post things here ad infinitum, just like the bigshot anime reviewers and the other people doing their best here on WordPress and elsewhere… but I don’t see that being me. Talking about anime and running this website has always been nothing more than a hobby, a side activity, for me, and so I shouldn’t push myself to try to write and post things here when I just don’t want to.

So I’ll most likely end up continuing to take breaks every now and then from this site, during which you won’t see anything posted from me. Now that I’ve said to both you all and to myself that I will be taking breaks, though, perhaps these breaks won’t end up being as long as my previous ones have been? I’ll also try to give more warning before I decide to hop off for a while, and not just silently leave things be for weeks and weeks.

At this point, I think that’s most everything I wanted to share or say about this website. I kind of ended up writing most of this as a single, giant stream of words coming from my mind to this screen, so maybe I’ll have a more organized post later reiterating some of these things and also talking a bit more about my motivations? We’ll see, I guess lol.

Anyway, look forward to my reviews, starting up again next week!

Jayke (AnimeBird)

(8 July 2018: made some small edits.)

I’ve been absent again!

Hello!

Long time hearing from me, huh?

My apologies; when I disappeared for that short while due to the website restructure and all the busy stuff I was dealing with at that time, I was only expecting that to only last a few weeks or something.

Obviously, that went on for longer than a few weeks.

I’ve continued to have things that I needed to focus my time on. I’ve honestly not had much time for personal hobbies and other things. (And honestly, all the free time I have had, I’ve spent playing my new Nintendo Switch… I really do have my priorities in order, huh?)

Part of that includes writing new reviews. My Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon-Maid review is maybe a bit over half-done (I think… I honestly haven’t even taken a look at it in a while), and I’ve only made minimal progress with writing reviews for other shows from that previous season. I haven’t watched any of the shows of the current season, despite there being a few that certainly seemed interesting to me.

Luckily, the things I’ve been working on have started to clear up. I’ll still need a week or two to finish up what I’m doing, and then I can start focusing on stuff like this again. (Although I still have a decent way to go in Breath of the Wild… so that will also be competing for my time lol.) After that point, I’ll try to start writing new reviews, and make a small stockpile.

It’s not that I’ve lost interest in writing anime reviews, because I honestly think it’s kind of fun to put out my opinions on these shows (even if no one else reads them, that’s fine). I think I’ve not had the easiest time making the transition from reviews being things I wrote on my own schedule to put in a notebook, to reviews being things I post on a set schedule for the world to see, though.

Part of it as well, I think, is the fact that I honestly have become a bit more disinterested in anime over the years. I’ve become pretty aware of its flaws, and anime is pretty quick to tread through the same tropes over and over. I still have a fascination for anime as a medium and I have a middling curiosity in the shows being put out, but I don’t see myself being as excited a fan of it as I was two or three years ago.

I’ll aim to return to this website in late May or early June, with a whole bunch of reviews of a whole bunch of shows. I want to be able to celebrate the one-year anniversary of my first review here (although I probably won’t do anything special this time around), so I don’t want to spend that time being inactive.

Anyway, if anyone’s been curious about where I’ve been, there you go. I apologize for how long I’ve been gone, and I hope I’ll see you again soon in the future!

Jayke (AnimeBird)

P.S. I’ve also been thinking more about a video format for my reviews. If I were to do video reviews, though, they probably won’t be for quite a while (like, years)… assuming I’m still doing this at that point.

Mega Website Update Post Thing!

Oh, hello!

So I’ve been cooking up some things for this website, and I thought it’d be knife to talk about them! … Oh, I’m sorry, did I say “knife”? I meant “nice”. Honest mistake, truly.

Funimation February

First of all, by sheer coincidence, I will be able to do a Funimation February! In case it was not made aware before, I stockpiled a bunch of reviews that I’ve made before I even started this site, and it turns out a good majority of the reviews I’ve yet to publish are from Funimation-licensed titles. (It wouldn’t be a majority, but I ended up scrapping a number of reviews because they weren’t written well enough, so the majority left over are that.)

Thus, look forward to me doing that this February! Maybe I’ll try to find a fancy little way to spruce up the site or something during that, but don’t count on it.

Along with that, I will be writing two non-review pieces for the month of February. The first will talk about the history of Funimation as a company; although I won’t really be providing much anything that you can probably find yourself, I want to compile it as part of this whole big event.

The second post will be more of a piece on North American licensors/distributors at large, and talking about their role in the anime process. I want it to be the starting point of a growing number of posts talking about the anime industry and how it works, simply because I’ve always wanted to do that since I began writing here. So hopefully that will be a good kickstart that will lead to more industry-related posts in the future.

Somewhat Related Things… plus Twitter!

This being said, I might not be posting a review this Friday to prepare for that (and other things going on in my life). I don’t want to completely rule it out just yet, but if you don’t see one on Friday, you’ll know why. I will try to mention it on Twitter if it ends up not happening.

Speaking of which, I do have a Twitter! In fact, it’s been at the bottom of every page here on this website! I’ll be trying to be more active on it, so if you want more of a look into what I’m doing with this (or anime in general), please follow me there! My account is AnimeBirdTweet, since AnimeBird was already taken. :/

Also, shoutouts to Karandi at 100 Word Anime! They’re a pretty cool blog, and they just started a Patreon too! Karandi has a lot more followers and is more active than I am, so they’re succeeding in every way I’m failing, but hey, that’s part of what makes them cool!

March Troubles

Alright, now to switch gears.

Sometime in mid-to-late March, this website will be going down for up to a week while I figure out some back-end stuff.

Actually, more specifically, the website will still be around, but it will be at “animebirdreviews.wordpress.com”, rather than the URL you’re used to (“animebird.net”). So I’m not gonna be actually gone during that period of time, I just will be harder to find.

It is temporary, I assure you! When I first started this website last year, I ended up in a setup that was needlessly complicated (and expensive), mainly because I’m pretty new to this whole owning-a-website thing. I’ve learned since then, though, but to implement the changes to make things easier on me, it will require some downtime.

I’m just putting this here now, so whoever reads this in the near future will be notified. … If it’s already past March (2017), well… you don’t have to worry about anything then, do you? … Why are you even reading this anyway?

Other Website Update Stuff

So, now I’ll just give a quick rundown of some other things I’ve changed or that are in the works:

  1. I added a “Marathon Mode” option to the top navigation bar, which you can get to by putting your mouse over the “Reviews” button (if you’re on mobile, I’m not entirely certain how you’ll get there, sorry). If you’re looking for a way to read all of my reviews in one place (for whatever reason), here you go! … Honestly, I just added it there because I thought it’d be kind of cool (or at least silly).
  2. I’ll be doing further translations for the McDonald’s anime ad thing. I asked people if they wanted me to do so on YouTube, and (unsurprisingly), a decent number said yes. I won’t give a deadline for that, since I haven’t even thought about it much yet, but it’ll be happening eventually.
  3. My 1-year-anniversary (since my first review) will be coming up this summer! I do have plans for things I want to do for it, but I’m gonna keep quiet for now.
  4. I’ll be trying to unify the colors and fonts used on my site and in my branding here. I don’t know yet if I’ll change the website to match the branding, or change the branding to match the website. We’ll see in the future though!
  5. Should I make the font size bigger for my review posts? It’s an 11 pt font; it’s not unreadable, but it is noticeably smaller. I’ll be pondering it.

And that’s about it. I know this is kind of long for an update post (but still not as long as my shortest review). I wanted to say a bunch of stuff though! So here we are.

I’ll see you around again sometime soon!

Jayke (AnimeBird)

Farewell to 2016

Alrighty, well, that’s one for the record books. Of course, last year will probably win a lot of records with “worst” in the title, but ehh, whatever.

Aside from the hectic world crumbling around us, 2016 stands out to me as the year I actually started this website here, Anime Bird! It’s… well, it’s a website.

For my first half a year here, I wasn’t exactly expecting myself to skyrocket off the ground into super-popularity… which is good, because I really didn’t skyrocket into super-popularity at all! So that’s one point for me, I guess. That being said,  I think I’ve become a bit more comfortable here, and it does excite me to see people reading my posts, and liking them and following me (even if it’s usually the same two people liking and commenting on my stuff, that’s still better than none, and I appreciate you both a lot!)

I posted 15 reviews in 2016, and I’m pretty happy with the quality of them. Two of them were accompanied with an “Additional Thoughts” segment. In total, though, this means that out of the 26 weeks I was active here, I had 12 weeks where nothing was posted (I posted my Tanaka-kun and Danmachi reviews in the same week). That’s almost half of the entire 26 weeks; while I previously announced a hiatus or “no review this week” for some of them, that only counts for a handful of the weeks without reviews.

For 2017, I do want to try to be more active, and posting a review every week… or at least for the weeks where I don’t post a review, consistently say that I won’t beforehand. My website actually got a decent amount of traffic during October, the month that I had totally disappeared, which is a major disappointment, because they could’ve become regular fans of this blog.

Along with that, I’ve translated two YouTube videos. If you’re wondering why you don’t see more translation things out of me… honestly, it’s because I haven’t found anything else that I wanted to really sit down and translate. I do want to practice and improve my Japanese, and part of it does come down to me trying to find something on my own that I want to translate, but at the same time, I just haven’t been feeling the desire to.

That’s another thing I’d like to do more of this year, even if it results in me just re-translating things that have been translated before, just so I can get the practice. I may look into doing Vocaloid songs, I dunno. I’m open to suggestions!

Lastly, for 2017, I also want to make more posts other than reviews (and potentially translations). I’m a pretty darn busy person, unfortunately, so it does surprise me sometimes how I am able to keep this blog going, but at the same time, there is more about anime and the anime industry that I want to talk about that I just don’t have the ability to do in reviews alone. I don’t know if my schedule will permit me to spend time writing more posts, but I really would like to do so. (Especially since I hinted at doing a mini-series about American anime licensors before.)

And maybe, hopefully, perhaps, fingers-crossed… I may do some video anime reviews too.

I have big plans for this year, and I have absolutely no idea if I’ll do any of them! We’ll just have to see what 2017 holds, and hope the world survives to see 2018.

Until next time,

Jayke (Anime Bird)

P.S. I do want to do a bigger post at some point talking about who I really am, since I’ve been wanting to move away from my former idea of “Anime Bird” being this unknown entity. I’ll just add that to my ever-growing list of things I wanna get done this year…

P.P.S. That image features characters from “New Game”, found on Crunchyroll’s Twitter! I will totally be doing a review on that… soon, hopefully.

Sorry for the absence!

Hey there!

Long time, no talk, huh? Yeah, sorry about that. I got too caught up in other things, but I’m still around.

I will be posting a brand-new review this Friday, and trying to get back into the swing of posting every Friday. I’ve watched a number of interesting shows recently, and I wanna share my thoughts!

So hang tight, and you’ll hear from me again really soon!
